Invisalign®

Invisalign® treatment involves a series of clear, plastic, removable aligners that are used to move your teeth to the desired position.
Self Ligating Braces

Self Ligating Braces do not need O-rings or wire ties to hold the wire in. These brackets may also be easier to clean which reduces the risk of decay or gum disease.

Ceramic Braces (Clear Braces, Tooth Coloured Braces)

Clear Braces are much less obvious as they are tooth coloured and blend in very well with your teeth.

Lingual Braces

Lingual Braces are attached to the inside surface of the teeth (at the back of the teeth) and cannot be seen. They certainly look great! It may take time for the tongue to adapt. Treatment with Lingual Braces may take longer overall and each adjustment appointment takes longer than Conventional Braces.

Conventional (Stainless Steel) Braces, Coloured Braces

Conventional Braces are the most popular in most orthodontics practices. They require either wire ties or elastic ties (O-rings) to hold the wire in the braces. We have many different coloured O-rings to give you coloured braces. You can customise your braces and your smile every time you see us!

Which braces are the best?

It is important to remember these different types of braces are tools to enable us to create the ideal smile for you. So the decision, in most cases, is up to you!

It is very important that your teeth are clean and your gums are healthy.

During the appointment the following will occur:

Your teeth will be cleaned with special toothpaste and a toothbrush that is similar to an electric toothbrush.

A check retractor is placed.

Your teeth are washed and dried and prepared for the braces to be placed. The braces are glued to your teeth. A bright light is used to set the glue.

When all of the braces are bonded to your teeth, horseshoe shaped wires are placed, one for the upper teeth and one for the lower teeth. These wires pass through a little slot in each brace and are held in place by very small elastic bands. These “elastics” may be grey to blend with the brace or you may wish to choose from our wide selection of colours. No elastics are necessary if you choose our self-ligating brackets.

We will teach you how to look after your braces and teeth. We will show you how to keep your teeth healthy and to help treatment to be efficient and effective. The following information will assist you to care for your braces. Toothbrushing It is important to brush your teeth after each meal (3 times a day). This may mean taking a toothbrush to school or work. Use a soft toothbrush and be diligent in removing all plaque and food from your teeth. It is vital to maintain excellent oral hygiene throughout your orthodontic treatment. Flossing You should floss once a day to keep your gums healthy and to avoid tooth decay. Flossing with braces on can be a little bit tricky! You can use Floss Fish to make it easier to clean your teeth. Disclosing tablets Use the disclosing tablets weekly. After brushing your teeth, chew a disclosing tablet for 30 seconds and spit out the excess. The areas that turn dark pink are areas you are missing and need more attention! ...

Toothbrushing

It is important to brush your teeth after each meal (3 times a day). This may mean taking a toothbrush to school or work. Use a soft toothbrush and be diligent in removing all plaque and food from your teeth. It is vital to maintain excellent oral hygiene throughout your orthodontic treatment.

Flossing

You should floss once a day to keep your gums healthy and to avoid tooth decay.
Flossing with braces on can be a little bit tricky! You can use Floss Fish to make it easier to clean your teeth.

Disclosing tablets

Use the disclosing tablets weekly.
After brushing your teeth, chew a disclosing tablet for 30 seconds and spit out the excess.

The areas that turn dark pink are areas you are missing and need more attention!

Managing discomfort

Your teeth may become tender while they are moving. Panadol or Nurofen can assist in managing this discomfort.

Orthodontic wax can be used to stop your cheeks rubbing or catching on your braces.

If you find an ulcer develops, rinse with warm salty water twice a day and let us know if the braces are poking into your cheek.

Diet

PLEASE AVOID ANYTHING HARD!
Please avoid hard, sticky, chewy foods such as popcorn, nuts, ice, pizza crust, hard biscuits and lollies. These foods can cause your braces to break.

Cut foods such as steak, carrots and apples into bite sized pieces. Habits such as fingernail biting or chewing on pens can also damage your braces. While your braces are in place stick to a well balanced, low sugar diet.

Breakages

If you have a breakage or problem with your braces please call our practice and refer to the above diagram so you can accurately describe the problem.

It is always helpful for our staff to know in advance of any breakages you may have so that we are adequately prepared for your appointment.

If you play contact sport we advise you wear a mouthguard. We have special mouthguards designed to fit over braces available at our practice.

Please don’t hesitate to ask us ☺

If you need any extra help regarding looking after your braces, please ask one of our friendly staff for a demonstration.

Keeping appointments

Please remember to keep your scheduled appointments. Please contact us if you can’t attend your appointment. We will make alternative arrangements as soon as possible. If you do not attend your scheduled appointments, your orthodontic treatment may take longer

By following these simple guides, you can help to ensure the success of your treatment.

The braces are squeezed and this enables the braces to come loose from your teeth. A small amount of dental glue normally remains on the teeth.

This small amount of dental glue is polished off the teeth with a dental handpiece. Only the dental glue is polished off the teeth. Although it may feel a bit strange, it does not hurt.
