If you are a parent and believe your child requires orthodontics, there are a number of things for you to consider.
When should orthodontic treatment for children begin?
The Australian Society of Orthodontists’ recommend review by an orthodontist by 8 years of age. Rarely is treatment indicated at this age however certain conditions, if treated at the appropriate stage of dental and jaw development, may obviate the need for further treatment or more complicated treatment later in life.
Do all baby teeth need to be lost before treatment?
Orthodontic treatment will usually not begin until all baby teeth have been lost and the adult teeth have erupted. This is not always the case however and so assessment by an orthodontist prior to all baby teeth being lost is normally of value.
What investment will be required?
This really depends on what is required at the time and whether treatment should be staged. Treatment commenced at the ideal stage of development if often more financially and biologically economical. The orthodontist will be able to give you an indication of the likely investment required during the consultation appointment.
